Chinese School Update
Sam reports that there has been an increased interest from parents wanting to enrol their children into the school, notably from families that have moved into Lancaster from other areas like Leeds and London. She is preparing to welcome 5 potential new students to the school.
She also raised the need to improve the quality of teaching. She has been addressing the consistency of teaching by volunteers and homework provision.
The committee also discussed news about possible teacher training course help in China where staff from the Chinese School could travel to China to gain experience. The programme is supported and organised through the PRC Consulate and Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs.
2019 Duan Wu Festival Celebrations 2019
The committee discuss plans to mark the Duan Wu Festival which falls on Friday 7th June 2019.
The committee agree to organise activities to be held in Lancaster's Williamson Park for members on Saturday 8th June from 12 noon. Activities planned include outdoor sports games, with zongzi and other refreshments provided but everyone encouraged to share their own food and drink.
To help cover costs, the committee agreed on a fee of £3 for adults, £2 for children and 50p for toddlers to attend the celebrations if they do not contribute any food or drink.
If there is poor weather on the day of the event, the contingency is to cancel the event at Williamson Park and hold the event at the Chinese School on Dallas Road on the following day.
Summer Day Trip
Following an application to the Eric Wright Fund, the Hua Xian Chinese Society were successfully granted £500 towards a day trip for the community in Lancaster.
Plans will now have to be made to book a suitable coach for the day trip to Conwy, Llandudno and Cheshire Oaks. Once the arrangements have been made, trustees and volunteers will help publicise the trip with posters and social media.
Raymond has asked for quotes from a number of companies for approximately 50 seats with prices ranging from £750 to £1100 for the date of 26th August 2019. However the committee agreed we will continue to look for more quotes that may be cheaper.
New Multi-Cultural Festival
Sam recently attended the Art of Communities event organised by Lancaster District CVS.
During that event where discussed potential future projects, Sam recieved positive feedback on the idea of organising a multi-cultural festival representing different groups around the district. She proposed to the committee the potential to organise an event in Morecambe or Lancaster Williamson Park sometime in the summer as another major festival to complement our existing annnual Chinese New Year celebrations held in the winter.
The committee agreed to see how feasible this could and look at potential venues, funding, resources and activities to be discussed at future meetings.
